On Friday, June 11, 2010, we paddled Rock Springs Run toward the headwaters through some of the most pristine wilderness in Central Florida. The weather was a typical summer day, clear blue skies, and hot (hovering near the 100 degree mark), but the run was heavily canopied and enjoyable with stops along the way to cool off in the clear water of Rock Springs. Somewhat missing on the trip was the bear and deer I kept hearing about, but there were plenty of alligators to satisfy my lust to experience the wild... one alligator swam under my kayak - nice to know the crystal clear water would allow me to see below the surface. He looked huge and will mostly get bigger the more I tell the story.
On the return, we diverted to the right and paddled a short distance to the Wekiwa Springs. If the boat traffic was any indication of how crowded it could get, I would recommend doing this run on a weekday. You won't be disappointed.
Rock Springs Run is now on my list of favorites and will look forward to doing it again.
